Portland duo Talkdemonic is Kevin O'Connor (drums) and Lisa Molinaro (viola). You can find the group's kinetic instrumental music on five releases dating back to the early 2000s. The most recent is Ruins, released last fall on the Glacial Pace label.
While the group's name might be, as the band suggests, either a conversation starter or conversation ender (and we recorded the session on Friday the 13th, for what that's worth), the name doesn't reveal much about the music. Based on loops, keyboards, and synthesized guitar lines, the songs shake and build over the steady heat of O'Connor's drumming while Molinaro creates a swirl of melody and distortion over the top. Song names ("Midcentury Motion", "Palace Walk", "Slumber Verses") seemingly suggest a visual or physical basis for the songs, but O'Connor and Molinaro say the names too are just names, sometimes a private joke and sometimes a random pair of words assigned to their carefully layered songs.
After opening shows with Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, and Handsome Furs last fall, Talkdemonic has just left Portland for a 6-week headlining tour, which will take them to California, the Southwest and Midwestern states, before a return to Oregon February 24th in Eugene - at Sam Bond's Garage -- and February 25th in Salem - at Ike Box. They'll also play SXSW in Austin and the new TreeFort Festival in Boise in March.
