Blue Giant in-studio

Recording engineer: Steven Kray, with technical assistance from Bill St. James

Particularly if you follow the Portland music scene, it's a familiar pair singing and writing the songs behind Blue Giant. Kevin and Anita Robinson have released five full-length albums as Viva Voce over the past decade plus, relocating to Portland roughly halfway through that span. The duo has found no shortage of talented musicians to work with in their new hometown, and it was in fact a desire to collaborate with some of those musicians that first gave rise to the notion of Blue Giant. While the line-up has since shifted a bit to include Dave Depper on bass and Jesse Bates on pedal steel, our session included Seth Lorinczi (The Golden Bears) and Chris Funk (The Decemberists, Black Prairie) in those roles, as well as Evan Railton (Swords) on drums and a guest vocal spot from no less than Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) on the song "Gone For Good".

Blue Giant's self-titled full-length debut is out July 13th on the vaunted Vanguard label. That same week, they undertake a novel tour of record stores in Portland, Seattle and Eugene, playing the new record from start to finish in each city.

Wow, I have always loved Viva Voce and now this. The band sounds great and the sound quality of the recording is excellent, good job OPB! Heard Blue Giant on KNRK, some guys "perfect playlist" last week. I hope to make it to the Crystal Ballroom on the 25th to see the band live, rockin' lineup.
