Kelly Joe Phelps

Folk/blues guitarist and singer Kelly Joe Phelps visited our studios recently for this opbmusic instudio session. He performs in his signature style, and talks about his early performing career as a jazz bassist, improvisation, moving to fingerstyle and slide guitar, welcoming the muse, and finding his voice over the years as a singer. Not to be missed in the interview: a tribute to the late Dave Van Ronk, and the most amazing guitar lesson you never had, as he demonstrates 3 different beginnings to the song "The Anvil," all leading to different versions of the song. (See below, in the audio player, the interview section preceding "The Anvil".)

Steven Kray engineered the recording, and we have video, thanks to Ben Kerney.
