It was some time in the latter quarter of 2011 when a scrappy little recording from a scrappy little band from northern Alabama-- Athens, to be precise-- first came to our attention. Alabama Shakes had our ear immediately with the self-recorded, self-released debut EP they posted to their Bandcamp page. Brittany Howard's powerhouse vocals brought to mind the likes of Janis Joplin and Rachel Nagy, helping to deliver a swaggering mix of old school garage, blues and soul.
Forward to now, and it's not likely anyone could have predicted the kind of success Alabama Shakes would enjoy in such a short period of time. They come to Portland and the Crystal Ballroom March 2nd fresh off both Grammy nominations and an appearance this past weekend on Saturday Night Live (see below). British folk-blues singer Michael Kiwanuka, himself something of an overnight sensation for last year's Home Again debut, opens the show.
It's bound to be a hot ticket-- in fact it's already officially sold out-- but here's your chance to score a couple on us! See details and entry form below. Good luck!
** UPDATE 3/22: Congratulations to the ticket winners: Seth K; Jason L; Bill W; Gretta S; and Jessie M.
