Hey, did you smell that in the air? Maybe it wasn't today, yesterday or even tomorrow, but recently there was the unmistakable aroma of warmer weather floating around and with it the promise of the end of winter doldrums and the summer to come.
Know what else suggests a promising summer? The just announced batch of acts that make up the lineup for the annual Pickathon Indie-Roots Music Festival to be held August 3-5 once again at Pendarvis Farm near Portland. Neko Case is the name that jumps right out, an exciting if also natural choice for a headline act (she looks at home in a barn, too), while a number of popular repeat offenders also bolster the lineup-- among them Dr. Dog, Blitzen Trapper, Heartless Bastards, and Langhorne Slim.
Continuing with the festival's trend over the past three or four years of expanding the breadth of flavors, included in the mix are electro-dance (Handsome Furs), world (Vieux Farka Toure), and soul-funk (Hot 8 Brass Band). Add to that intriguing names like White Denim, Cass McCombs and AA Bondy, as well as much-loved locals Alela Diane, Laura Gibson and Typhoon and were talkin' get here now summertime blues.
