Mike Midlo's a renaissance man. Whether he's singing trucker numbers or fronting Pancake Breakfast's weird, wild, western circus, he's never been afraid to kick it old school, as they say. It's only natural, then, that the primary form of physical delivery for his latest offering is a ruby-red cassette (unless blood-red is more accurate, given the darker hues of the songs). Midlo is joined by a Pancake cohort or two, as well as names like Lewi Longmire and the Tornfelt siblings, Annalisa (Black Prairie) and Tyler (Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside), among others, on the 8-song offering MidLo.
Album opener "Moonlight" is a fittingly ominous beginning to the collection, repeated lines like "Moonlight through the trees" and "Back behind the barn" saying perhaps more with what they don't say. Director Eiko Emersleben's new video brings the impending dread and desperation to life in this new black and white video, starring Adrienne Hatkin and Paul Seely (both of Autopilot is For Lovers) and a rather large and suspiciously well-positioned moon.
MidLo is out now on Curly Cassettes, or you can get it 21st century-style, right out of the air.
