The all-ages, all-local, all-volunteer musical entity PDX Pop Now! celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and they've been taking that opportunity to shine a light on their accomplishments over the past decade. Among those for Portland music fans-- this one included-- is the fact that the annual compilation and festival have come to feel like seasonal rites: the compilation as annual soundtrack heralding the fading of spring into summer, and the festival as all-inclusive warm weather party that (unofficially) launches festival season in Portland.
We might look at it as the beginning of all of that beginning this week, then, as PDX Pop Now! celebrates the release of the 2013 edition of its compilation-- 43 tracks over 2 discs-- Friday night at Backspace with an eclectic lineup of local lights in Sapient, Sean Flinn & the Royal We, Summer Cannibals and Wishyunu, as well as the unveiling of the schedule for this year's festival (held July 19-21 at SE Water and Salmon). As always, the price of admission also scores you a copy of the annual musical snapshot that is the compilation.
It's like Christmas in June in other words, and since we simply couldn't wait to get the compilation in our hot little ears, we asked PDX Pop Now comp coordinator Rochelle Hunter to help us drop the needle on a few cuts from this year's collection and preview the release show in an exclusive first listen (stream below).
ALSO: listen and/or read up for your chance to win a pair of tickets to Friday's release show at Backspace by responding correctly to one of the following hints Hunter dropped on us regarding this year's festival lineup. We're looking for the first correct response, a ticket pair going to each hint. Respond by noon on Friday to firstname.lastname@example.org, and include "PDX POP" in the subject line. Good luck!
