As we recently told you, PDX Pop Now! is set to release their 9th annual genre-hopping, all-local compilation this week-- always a sonic snapshot of the Portland scene circa now (or at least one hard-earned version of it, anyway). This means that we'll shortly be in the throes of one of our favorite Portland musical things, with the compilation release show Thursday night, the unveiling of the PDX Pop Now festival lineup and schedule, and the annual festival itself, roughly six weeks from now (July 20-22 at Refuge).
Given all of that, there seemed no better time than now to shine a light on this year's compilation, and we do it with the help of PDX Pop Now! compilation coordinator Jesse Studenberg, who introduces a handful of tracks (from Archers, The Ocean Floor, Future Historians, Boyscout Discovery, Brooke Parrott and Rose, respectively) taken from this year's spread, and in the process reveals some of the toil and tribulation that goes into culling 650+ submissions into 41 representative selections. We also talk about Thursday's release show at Holocene, a stellar bill which includes Sun Angle, (recent in-studio guests) Wild Ones, Rose, and Hollywood Tans.
Without further ado, then, let's drop that (virtual) needle...
