Saturday, June 30 And We're Off...

Hi. My name's Jeremy and I'm into music. I'm new on the air at OPB tonight, but I recently passed The National's Matt Berninger Thursday night in Portlandthe one month mark on the job (not that I'd call it that, necessarily) and in the area. Forgive me if I go around mouth agape for a while-- I'm used to driving two or three hours to see live music and the inevitable two in the morning drive home was learned to be taken as a matter of course. So forgive the wide eyes and such, while we've been busy prepping for tonight's debut program I managed to catch The National at Berbati's Pan, not to mention all of the artists we've had stop by OPB in Portland for the first of our in-studio sessions. So, yeah, it's good to be here. Speaking of tonight and those in-studios, we begin our run with a session from Laura Veirs (produced and recorded masterfully by OPB's Steven Kray, oh by the way). Veirs, who recentlyLaura Veirs at OPB became a Portlander following a decade in Seattle, puts down four intimate, solo versions of songs from her latest, Saltbreakers, and it's a great way to begin things. She's just the first of many artists, both local and touring, we'll be featuring in our studios. This new possibility, then, begs the question: Who are you looking forward to seeing play Portland (or Eugene, or Corvallis, or Bend, etc.) this summer? Even better, are they a well-kept secret we should know about? Do tell.

Stream: Laura Veirs Live @ OPB (Recording Engineer: Steven Kray)

Hi Jeremy

Welcome to Portland! I have been an on again and off again supporter of and listener to KOPB- frustrated because a few years back KOPB replaced a lot of music programming with public affairs shows (I am a music junkie). I did not know anything about "In House" prior to last night and was utterly delighted when I heard it! Portland probably has more great musicians in more genres per capita than any US city, and it's been frustrating to not have a radio showcase for all of this incredible talent. KBOO (Portland Community supported radio at 90.7 FM) has some live performance shows, but they are weekdays at noonish (folk shows) and late night (punk rock) and are not of the caliber of, say, World Cafe, which sadly is not heard in Portland. I was delighted that your first guest was Laura Veirs, whose music I love. I hope you'll have the Decmberists on soon- they are my current favorite band. The local print media love to ignore the Decemberists- Willamette Week complained that they played too much in Portland, and did "Mariner's Revenge Song" as an encore- was Led Zeppelin ever criticized for performing "Stairway to Heaven" at their concerts? I really enjoyed all of the music you played last night- what a treat.

I have been in love with Portland since I moved here 30 years ago. I produced the Portland FolkMusic Society 3rd Friday concerts for over 10 years and I have been one of the hosts of Folk Espresso, a contemporary folk program on KBOO Mondays from 530 to 7 AM (yes, that's AM as in really early) for over 10 years. I'd love to have an opportunity to share my knowledge of Portland and the music scene here with you. (By the way, I have no hidden agenda of promoting PFS- I no longer produce the concerts). It's just that here are so many great performers here- 3 Leg Torso, Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, Doug Smith, Jamie Stillway, Pete Krebs, and many more that I can recommend who I think would be great guests for your show. I have a variable if not flexible schedule, and can meet you any time of day.

Once again, welcome to Portland, and thanks for the great music.

Cheers

Jack

Great to hear you again! Will you be operating a podcast from the new location? Thanks, Sean

First Jack, thanks for the meaty response-- anyone who gets up that early for that long to play music is certainly alright in my book. Shh, The Decemberists are one of my favorites, too-- trust me, I hope we'll have them on soon, too. I've visited a few times over the years and have developed what we'll call a working knowledge of a (tiny part) of Portland's music scene-- Krebs, in fact, is a long time favorite of mine, as is James Low. I appreciate the offer and would be glad to pick your brain-- I'll be in touch.

Sean, to answer your question, I'm not sure if there will be podcasts, per se, but I know that there will likely be streaming archives at some point. Does this mean you've migrated here along with me?

You Oregonians are lucky to have this guy. Southeast Idaho, Pocatello, and KISU miss you my friend. You didn’t have to wait long before gaining any “out of the area” fans. We’ll be watching and wishing you well.

How about an RSS feed for this blog? Glad to have it around, but I need a reminder to check it, and RSS is the best memory jogger I know.

Hey Brett - I'm the same way. If you're using a browser that supports auto-discovery (just about anything modern), you'll see a feed icon up in the address bar. I'll add an RSS link to the sidebar as well.
