Sunday Night Open Thread: The Week Ahead

Girls, Anti-Pop Consortium, Julian Plenti, Fanfarlo and King Khan & BBQ Show are just a few of the notable acts playing Portland stages this week. Plus tonight on the air, we'll hear from our recent visit with Loch Lomond as they play songs from their new EP.

Questions? Comments? Requests? That's why we're here.....

What a great opener to tonite's show, I'm still reeling from back to back Mick Jones.... that was a superb segueway btw, nice one!

Ugh. The Bowie track is one that drove me away from 94.7--please don't tell me is will be overplayed here, too! I thought In House was my refuge...

I missed the intro. What was the song that was played at 8:30pm?? It was amazing!
Thanks!

OK, finally up and running again here...

So thanks all around for listening-- in case you missed it, the Bowie track was for the occasion of the 40th anniversary deluxe reissue of Space Oddity this week-- yes, I went with the obvious choice....maybe only because I haven't had time yet to delve into the extra goodies included on the reissue. So, to answer: overplayed? No. But Bowie is Bowie.:)

Let's see just after 8:30, "Telephones" by Headlights from their new album called Wildlife. The full playlist is here:

And for the record, in response to the email of an astute listener, let me correct myself: that's Carbon Silicon NOT Carbon Silicone. Oh, the humanity...and my apologies.

JP kickin' it old school with Aretha ... love it! Now Black Joe Louis with Spoon at the Crystal? Not so much. Am I the only Portlander who's not a fan of Spoon? I think I'll wait till BJL headlines a show ...

November 15, 2009 at 10:10pm by Jeremy Petersen

Ranjit, I'm speechless. I gotta believe you just haven't heard the right Spoon. I say listen to Girls Can Tell on repeat for a week or two and you'll be hooked. Hooked!

November 15, 2009 at 10:19pm by Ranjit

Ha! OK I'll keep an open mind and check them out in more detail - I did see the accoustic set at the PDX Pop Now benefit, no doubting Britt Daniel's talent, I've just never glommed onto their style - but mostly 'cause I'm hankerin' for more BJL ... I actually thought their sound was a too big for Mississippi Studios though I loved seeing 'em up close.

Hi Ranjit
Your tastes and mine are different - I'd like a whole lot less soul but dig Adelle, and I'm also no fan of Spoon, however Britt Daniel is a talent and I can happily listen to him.

As I once said to JP it's about overlapping Venn Diagrams of taste.

For the Headlights fan above see the review on opbmusic here:http://opbmusic.org/blog/entries/611-Previews-Reviews-Headlights-The-Subterranean-Howl-and-Merrill

And JP - have you picked up on Telegraph Canyon yet? The real thing out of ZTexas (think Gourds/Uncle Tepelo) amazing 7 piece touring in full bus, they were amazing at THe Woods last week.

Maybe I'm odd, but I've always heard a lot of soul undertone in Spoon's music-- at least since they reinvented themselves in a way with Girls Can Tell. I prefer that album, in fact, because of it, and because of the pared back production. Take "Everything Hits at Once," for example-- not only a great video, but a groooove, too....

I have not yet heard Telegraph Canyon, but those RIYLs are certainly good company. Thanks for the rec!

different strokes, imjp - somehow I'm never disappointed at anything I hear on In House though.
