Friday, June 29 Welcome!
This weekend marks the start of a new music program on OPB, called “In House,” with our new music host Jeremy Petersen. It’s also the opening of this space – where you can talk music with other listeners and OPB’s music hosts, comment on what you hear, and point us to music you think we should know about.
Let me introduce Jeremy. He’ll be in Saturday and Sunday nights this weekend, playing out the first editions of “In House.” In the show, he’ll be bringing you a blend of interesting music: singer-songwriters, indie/rock, and more, with special attention on the local music scene. Jeremy joined the OPB staff this month from <state></state><state></state>Idaho, where he was used to driving many hours to shows in Boise and the SLC. Think he’s enjoying the Portland music scene? Yeah.
Speaking of, we’ve been having a great time bringing in local and touring artists to play in the studio and chat, and that’s going to be a regular feature on “In House.” Since Jeremy’s a recent transplant, it seemed only fitting to start these in-studios with Laura Veirs, who is just getting situated in her new home, Portland, following a tour in support of her new CD Saltbreakers. She talks with Jeremy about all the salt/earth/water imagery in her songs, and sings and plays a couple of them. This is in Saturday’s show. Jonatha Brooke has also been in the studio to play, and Gill Landry, The Veils, and just this week The Shaky Hands, playing a set that had the place buzzing. All will be coming up. So stay tuned, as they say in radio. And thanks for stopping by.
Catch the first shows of “In House,” on Saturday and Sunday nights at 9. Also, “Undercurrents” will be heard on Friday nights in July, and “Eclecticity” is Monday through Thursday nights.
-Dave

For all of you incredibly lucky folks in Oregon, Jeremy's shows in Idaho were some of the best radio in the region. You are darn lucky to have him at OPB.
Please get the show streaming and back on podcasts. There are a lot of us all around the planet that want to be able to hear his show again!

Hmmm. Songs that I thought I'd never hear on the radio. Not a bad concept ya have there.

Cool - I'm enjoying what I'm hearing so far (35 minutes and counting), after being pleasantly surprised to find this new program following my favorite music show Afropop Worldwide tonight, Sat 6/30/07, instead of Steven Cantor. (Sorry Steven). This is actually more tolerable to me by far (so far), besides being locally focused (thanks). I used to immediately snap my radio off after 9pm on weekends because I couldn't tell what might come out, and some of it was a little hard to listen to as I was trying to wind down for the evening. (A little too eclectic for me, and I listen to everything from Vivaldi to Pink Floyd to Kitka myself, but not usually in the same sitting). I might just start leaving it on more now. Who needs to watch re-runs of America's Got Talent when you're featuring some great local talent here? I'll be looking for a lot of these artists on my Pandora stations to hear at other times of the day. Welcome.

Thank you I just found this program. It is sort of like an open mike would hopefuly sound, at a local coffee house. Very interesting, and nothing is as terrible as an open mike at a local coffee house.

Finally Portland has radio programming worthy of the incredible music talent that comes from this small town. KEXP Seattle kicks so much ass I can hardly believe it, and it's about time Portland has OR/WA/BC programming in mind. While your're at it, include CA (Grandaddy, etc). Neko Case rules, Laura Veirs is way cool....thanks for the new Wilco on air and lets f'ing rock Seattle off the radio MAP!!!
P.S. Play Elliott Smith

Thanks all for the positive feedback, suggestions have been noted and carefully filed away for future reference.
Hey mixtape, I'm not one to gossip, but I think he does. I caught a glimpse of him the other night at the National show.

While I appreciate any new music program on the air that plays a lot of local acts I have to say that listening to the first show and first half an hour or so of the Sunday, it seems to be a single genre show. They all could be the same band. I'll keep listening though, just in case there's something slightly different that turns up.

Hmm, I would agree in some instances, Bob (in fact, in some instances it is the same band), but for the most part I beg to differ. It all depends on perspective, though. To me, Spoon, Rufus Wainwright and Tom Waits, for example, are three rather distinct sounds. All Western, all "pop" (as in, not Classical or Jazz), it's true, but distinct, nevertheless. What's your specific take? Thanks for listening, Bob-- don't give up just yet.

great to hear something new when I turned on the radio. You can tell Laura that her appearence paid some dividends as I am now listening to the full Saltbreakers album.
Dito to KEXP, everytime I head up north I am pleasantly surprised at what comes on my radio. Its about time Portland was blessed with a good radio show too.
Yes your show represents somewhat of a culture, but not a genre. There is so much good music coming out these days that fits within your choosen genre that it is good you are at least sticking to a theme. Good on ya. I wish KLCC here in Eugene would get on a similar wagon and stop playing a bunch of re-made classics, cheesy smooth jazz, "new-blues," and John Mayer everyday from 9:00 to 3:00. There too much good original music coming out everyday for that kinda thing.

Just heard the end of a great piece at about 10:15 pm Mon night 7/2. It was live, sounded African, lots of counter point percussion with acoustic guitar in the lead. I would love to know who the artists are and how to hear more.

It's a band called Tarika, from Madagascar. http://www.tarika.nu/
The song Monday night was from the CD "Tarika 10 - Beasts, Ghosts & Dancing." Glad you liked it.

Hello David,
Love the show. When I heard the first autorickshaw song tonight it reminded me of Patricia Barber. Don't know if you've had her on te playlist but the mood of her music would fit in well I think.
