Misc. Msic. : Interviews and Thoughts on Summer Music

It’s official. The blazing summer is upon us Portlanders (insert mild hysterical relief here). It means so many things, from Pickathon to PDX Pop Now, to having the option of blasting your favorite summer record with the windows rolled down. But being the friendly public radio station we are, we wanted to hear more than just ourselves talk about what album says summer best. So we asked some of them industry people that question (and a few other random ones of course). Don’t be shy to tell us your answers too.

What shows are on your calendar?
June 13 and 14 I'll be in Seattle performing music for Zoe Scofield's dance piece "Old Girl" at On the Boards. Frankly I can't think past mid month!

What was for breakfast today?
A shot of wheatgrass and a tall glass of green apple juice; I'm doing a juice detox.

What albums say summer to you?
Of the two that come to mind the first isn't a traditional summertime-vibe record but happens to make me think of summer: Hot Snakes “Automatic Midnight” and then Deerhoof “Friend Opportunity,” which is much sunnier.

What shows were on your calendar recently?
Mint Chicks at Backspace May 29, Western Hymn at a house party on June 5, and Love is All at holocene June 9.

What are some nostalgic summer albums?
Hmm, probably Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted or The Zombies' Odessey and Oracle. I remember listening to those records a lot during the summer in high school and college.

Recent shows?
St. Vincent at The El Rey in LA. Nite Jewel at the Smell, then Animal Collective, Rio en Medio, Brightblack Morning Light and Black Dice all in one weekend! Whew!

Good summer album recommendation?
Right now I've got to say the new Phoenix record is about the best sunny day, windows down, summer record that I've heard in a really long time.

What shows are on your calendar?
Right now on my calendar are Passion Pit at Bimbo's 365, Jens Lekman at Bottom of the Hill and of Montreal at Fox Theatre. I am sure there will be plenty more added but those are my for sure shows right now.

Brian Mumford, Dragging an Ox Through Water
What are you listening to lately?
I'm a ton to these right now in the sunshine: New Budweiser Sprite tape called "Dandruff Massage;" New Polyps record called "The Gong is the Moon;" New Cysts 7" called "Public Release;" a song by Leather Tom and the Dirty Dudes called "Backstage at the Leather Ballet.”

Tour updates?
For me: I'm gonna go to Europe to open for Jackie-O Motherf--r on a month-long tour all over the place. When we get back, I'll head down to California for a little over a week for more shows there, too.

What d’you eat for breakfast today?
Toast and leftover bok choy from last night!
