This Saturday marks the annual event known as Record Store Day. The event started as a promotional tool in 2007 highlighting independent record stores around the country and quickly exploded into a national celebration including artists, special releases and limited edition sets. Oregon record stores--and artists to boot--have had a strong showing in the past and the trend continues this year with loads of local participation. Some of the highlights from the Beaver State include a special 7" release of "The Rake Song" by the Decemberists, a 7" split from The Thermals and Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, the Blitzen Trapper 7" "War is Placebo" and the Dandy Warhols: Earth to the Remix E.P. Volume Two CD.
The fun doesn't stop there, either. In fact, the Record Store Day giblets only get better. Music Millennium will be hosting a special in-store appareance by Queensryche at noon. The band will be signing copies of their newest CD, American Soldier, for fans.
Jackpot Records meanwhile, is blowing the whole thing out with free concerts at both of their locations. The Shaky Hands will be performing a free, all ages show at 2pm downtown followed by Loch Lomond at 3pm. Over at the Hawthorne location, Langhorne Slim will be giving fans a free treat with a 1pm in-store performance.
Outside our fair state, artists like Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Camera Obscura, Black Kids, Bad Religion, Jenny Lewis, My Morning Jacket, Magnolia Electric Co., Bruce Springsteen and The Smiths are all in on the Record Store Day action, with new or special releases. Most--if not all--of tomorrow's special releases will be available at participating Oregon stores. Here's a list of locations around the state that are in on it. Check out the stores for specific events, releases and details. Happy Record Store Day!
