Dave here, in tonight for Jeremy, who's trainhopping (or maybe something less exciting and rugged) his way back from SXSW. This thread's yours!

Good interview, Dave. Awesome to hear you on the radio!
March 22, 2009 at 9:26pm by gunky
Theme request: Long distance love. A colleague of mine confessed she's gotten herself into a long distance relationship - west coast to east coast. She's into music, though mired in her older stuff. I'm trying to build a playlist for her. Looking for good long-distance relationship songs. Got any suggestions? Any you feel like playing? I already sent her this one http://www.folkalley.com/openmic/song.php?id=9543, which is great but a little slow.
On SXSW - I caught the NPR broadcast of The Decemberists, live, from their ASC website. I know you played the album the other night, which I also heard, but the live show sounded a bit more engaged. Still, it's a lot to take on. Portland bands are also getting a good showing from NPR. Blind Pilot came off well. Wasn't as impressed with Blitzen Trapper's show, but that might have been the recording's sound too. Thao had a good reference to Portland Cello Project.

Scott--thanks! Good to see you on here.
Gunky: I'll have to give that one some thought, but I'll come up with something. (I'm no stranger to the long-distance scenario.)
Yeah, NPR's been giving some serious attention to Portland bands, most recently Laura Gibson and M. Ward, it's cool to see those kids represent!

Good grief Gunky - songs for a long distance relationship - for a friend? Do them a favour and suggest non-romance songs. An old one comes to mind: Another Sattelite by XTC from Skylarking.
DC: Note the exceptional TUNE-YARDS play in PDX on 4/11 - how about a song of theirs on the show?
March 22, 2009 at 9:42pm by gunky
I'm with you, IMOJP, but she's all mooney and enjoying wallowing in it. But I think it's a good idea to throw in some stuff to break up the lovestruck stuff. I'll check out the XTC tune. Sounds like I may have struck a nerve with DC too.
March 22, 2009 at 9:48pm by Dave Cusick
Gunky: working on the theme! "Letters and Drawings," however sad, is my first attempt at it. More to follow...
IMOJP: No Tune-Yards in the library, but I will take the recommendation to check them out.
March 22, 2009 at 9:50pm by gunky
Damien Jurado - good tune, but hoo boy, might be a bit rough on someone who's mooney. I'll take it under advisement.
March 22, 2009 at 9:52pm by Dave Cusick
"Far Away!" Huh? Huh?
March 22, 2009 at 9:58pm by inmemoryofjohnpeel
OK Gunky
Freeze Puppy - Two lifelong buddies
Gene - Is it Over?
The Go-Betweens - Someone Else's Wife
and of course
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive!
March 22, 2009 at 10:02pm by gunky
"Far Away" kills. M. Ward works too, for pepping her up. Good choices. Thanks to IMOJP too. I'm going to have some work of my own to do now.
March 22, 2009 at 10:04pm by inmemoryofjohnpeel
Will Oldham aka Bonnie Prince Billy. Palace etc.. seems to be in a minor crisis or at least no where near where he once was...
And this "African ' thing - isn't this Fun-Da-Mental's Ja Sha Taan (Joo Ley Lal Mustt Qalander) from Erotic Terrorism using Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's orginal?? Why the credit to African Dialects / Peter King (V/A: Nigeria 70- Lagos Jump)??
VERY WELL DONE for playing it anyway!
March 22, 2009 at 10:06pm by Dave Cusick
I also thought of Ween's "Stay Forever," might try and throw that one on before the night's over.
March 22, 2009 at 10:06pm by inmemoryofjohnpeel
Oh Sh@@. I have just realised that I switched to my own stream... hence I was hearing Fuan-da-mental - scrub that.
March 22, 2009 at 10:08pm by gunky
IMOJP - I looked a little closer at your list. I think you're trying to get me killed. Gene-Is it over? might not make the team. And the Go Betweens - Someone Else's Wife is a good guess but actually the situation is much more innocent.
March 22, 2009 at 10:08pm by Dave Cusick
Hahahahaha, I was wondering how that worked...

The take-away is don't multi-task after 12 hours of editing. But Gunky here's one that's good and deep - Terry Hall & Mushtaq: Stand Together from 'The Hour Of Two Lights' - if you haven't heard it - just buy it - one of the great albums of the last few years.

I seem to have had multi-tasking problems myself. I lost the web site in mid-post about 15 minutes ago and couldn't get it going again, though I could hear the stream. Finally got it back but had to log-back in again. Oh well, thanks for the good stuff. I'll check out Terry Hall & Mushtaq.
And I did get a kick out of IMOJP's multi-tasking mixup too. You owe me a new keyboard, after I spewed my bourbon on this one.

Hey gunky - here are some of my favorite "I miss you now" or "I'll miss you when you're gone" songs:
Radio Campaign - M. Ward (That great refrain.."Come back, come back my little piece of mind")
Landed - Ben Folds
Dolorean - Heather Remind Me How This Ends
At the Hop - Devandra Banhart
Far Away Blues - Joe Purdy
Great show, Dave! Looking forward to hearing how Jeremy liked himself some Texas.

The repeats are s/w induced - my apologies...
Now to turn off the radio Etown is for MOR fans...
March 22, 2009 at 11:04pm by gunky
Thanks, Courtenay. I'll check em out.
This show has opened up my thought process too. I hope my colleague appreciate's the community effort on this project, when I'm done. For the record, she's in D.C., he's in Seattle. And I'm in PDX.
March 22, 2009 at 11:09pm by Dave Cusick
Thanks, Courtenay! Those were great suggestions, and glad you enjoyed the show. I've only chatted a little bit with Jeremy, and read his blog posts, but it sounds like the experience was life-changing. I'm sure he'll have lots of new music and stories to go along with.
Gunky: hope we've helped. One more "for the road" (as it were), "Bring it on Home."

"Looking forward to hearing how Jeremy liked himself some Texas"
Is his Oregonian? Either way I luv it, luv it, luv it.
another example: "I don't know, anymore, I'm going to have a garden next year"
