If you're anything like me, your New Year's Eve will consist of a few DVDs, a bottle of sparkling apple cider and a bedtime well before the clock s
trikes midnight (cut me some slack, please, I have a toddler at home).
But, I do know that most likely you are nothing like me and are actually going to do something fun to celebrate the turn of another year. If you have yet to decide just what your New Year's plans are, perhaps you'll indulge me and allow me to suggest some shows going on that would be a worthy way to spend the last night of 2008.
Bonobo (performing a DJ set at Berbati's Pan) Simon Green's recordings under the name Bonobo - many of which have been released on the venerable Ninja Tune label - are gorgeous downtempo affairs, shimmering with jazzy undertones and soulful vocals. As a DJ, Green breaks his songs down to their individual parts, pulling in the funk, hip-hop, R&B and psychedelic records that have influenced his work.
The Builders & The Butchers/Nick Jaina Band/Bark Hide & Horn (all performing at Doug Fir Lounge): Quite a powerful triple-bill here, though I feel a little bad for Jaina wedged as he is between two bombastic live acts. For the audiences, though, his citified folk will provide a nice moment of calm following the National Geographic inspired antics of BHH and the blasting acoustic gospel punk of The Builders.
Supersuckers (performing at Dante's): If there are any among you who need a not-so-gentle reminder about just how fun and dangerous rock shows can still be, might I direct you to this show. They may dip themselves into the deep waters of country music every now and again, but make no mistake, the blood of this band is 95% punk. There's a good chance you'll get to see some of it spilled this evening.
