The Old Believers CD Release: Berbati’s Pan, 7/10/08
Nelson Kempf and Keeley Boyle, the decidedly young duo that makes up The Old Believers, expanded the line-up to a drummer-less quartet for Thursday night’s release show for their new Eight Golden Greats. The Alaska-born act played all eight of ‘em, plus a take on Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home to Me," their old-new yin-yang matching the contrasting on-stage delivery styles of Kempf and Boyle themselves.

Magical show. Keeley Boyle and Nelson Kempf brought energy and a deep soulfulness to their CD release show. It was a privilege to witness! Their CD is one of the best I have ever heard and shows great range in creative use of sound and lyric. Granny's Song by way of NPR tipped me off to this talented duo and was on nonstop rotation on my Mac for weeks as I eagerly awaited this show. The show didn't disappoint. Another outstanding track from this excellent album is That's All, it literally took my breath away and its gorgeous choral accompaniment support a lyric that includes "We'll lie down in this withering bed and I'll hold your knobby hand in mine. Someday we'll let out into the air and our sweet love will seep into the ground. We're just getting older, that's all."
Powerful!

I agree, I was impressed that they were able to pull the new songs off live as well as they did given the production that sounds to play a major part on the recording. I hate to keep coming back to it, but I'm particularly impressed that they're this good at, what.....20? 21? It'll be interesting to see what comes from these two.
