Sunday, March 16 Sonic Stomp

The Portland duo Hillstomp join us in-studio tonight for a high-energy set of their anything but ordinary take on the blues. Following two studio recordings, the band attempted to capture the raucous energy of their live shows on the latest, After Two But Before Five. David Christensen talks to Hillstomp about recently becoming full-time musicians, their "improvised percussion," and their upcoming run of shows in the area as part of the McMenamin's Great Northwest Music Tour.

Plus, plenty to highlight this week, including upcoming performances from Beach House (Monday, Holocene), Steve Earle and Allison Moorer (Wednesday, Aladdin Theater), Jason Collett (Thursday, Fez Ballroom), Point Juncture, WA (Thursday, Mississippi Studios), Grand Archives (Friday, Dante's), Black Moth Super Rainbow and Dengue Fever (Friday, Wonder Ballroom), Justin Townes Earle (Friday, Doug Fir Lounge), Richard Julian (Friday, Mississippi Studios), Kaki King (Saturday, Doug Fir Lounge), and Headlights, Evangelicals and Southerly (Saturday, Towne Lounge), among many others.

Also this week, new releases from DeVotchka (A Mad & Faithful Telling), Daniel Lanois (Here Is What Is), Destroyer (Trouble in Dreams), She & Him (Volume One), Sera Cahoone (Only As the Day Is Long), and more.

I like that new Lanois. Here is my entry from yesterday...
Hello Jeremy,
It has been a while since I wrote but I hardly miss a show! Excellent selection. I too have had some great purchases due to your show. Notably Soul Savers and due to that, the brand new Gutter Twins. One good thing can lead to the next. I am a longtime Daniel Lanois fan and waiting for this week's release of his new album. Do you mind me asking what sources you like use to get such a quality and wide selection of stuff?
Thanks for the treats you offer! Vive la musique!

Hey Patrick,

Glad to hear that! You might be interested to know, in that case, that the tireless Mr. Lanegan is putting out yet another release later in the year with Isobel Campbell (formerly of Belle & Sebastian). Anyway...

To answer your question, there's still a lot of the old-fashioned, snail mailings winding up on our desks route, but there are also a lot of digital providers that send us things. As far as (legal) options that are open to everyone, I've been a long-time customer of emusic.com. It's kind of a more independent music-minded and way cheaper version of iTunes (they didn't pay me to say that). There are also a few blogs and magazines I read fairly regularly-- I can recommend Stereogum, Chromewaves, and Largehearted Boy as a few excellent digital sources, and Paste and Magnet as print media. As pointed out last week, the SXSW website is also a great place to randomly stumble across new acts.

Thanks for the continued listening!

I continue to thoroughly enjoy In House, especially since it's being archived so I can listen whenever it's convenient.

I'm currently enjoying Sunday night's show.
