We start 2008 off right tonight with an in-studio visit from Portland's Loch Lomond. Led by the singing and songwriting of Ritchie Young, the group has expanded to upwards of nine members since its first incarnation as a solo project back in 2003. This shift has been reflected in their live shows for a while now, but the release late last year of Paper the Walls marks the first time that it's been represented on a recording. We'll hear a lush set of songs from the band, and talk to them about the advantages and challenges that being in such a large group has brought with it.
Also tonight, we'll hear new music from the Mountain Goats, from the upcoming Heretic Pride. The new album drops next month just in from of the duo's two night run at Portland's Doug Fir on the 25th and 26th. Plus, music from new releases from the Drive-By Truckers, The Raveonettes, Liam Finn, and more.
MP3: Loch Lomond, from Paper the Walls- "Carl Sagan"
MP3: Mountain Goats, from Heretic Pride- "Sax Rohmer #1"
The thread's open all night...

Missed the Loch Lomond broadcast, but I wanted to mention that I caught the Weinland (+ James Low and Mike Coykendall Band) at the Doug Fir on Friday night and had a great time despite the sideways rain and wind. Weinland's new stuff sounds just as good if not a bit more rocking than on the "Demersville" disc, and it was my first time hearing James Low (got there too late for Coykendall).
Which makes me wonder about a Best Live Gig list for 2007 in Portland. My vote goes to David Lindley, but also saw several other good ones including Tony Furtado's CD Release Party at the Doug Fir (with Darol Anger). Still trying to recall the various others I saw....

Hey Chauncey,
Good to hear you caught that show-- I'm anxious to hear the new Weinland stuff myself. As for the Loch Lomond session, no worries. You'll be able to stream it here very soon, and we'll also be re-broadcasting it on a weeknight some time in the not too distant future. Trust me, they sound amazing.
A good idea about the Best Live Gig List (in fact, let's all post 'em right here!). Had I a more impressive list myself I might have thought of it, but I was only here half of the year and I'm afraid I don't get out much (I've got this pesky weekend gig, you see). Anyway, The National at Berbati's Pan last summer was particularly stirring, and I also saw a Broken West/Long Winters show in Salt Lake City last spring that left a lasting impression. Oh, and Wilco and Edgefield (even though I'm not accustomed to being so far from the stage.....but it was my first time seeing them). Anyone else?
