Sunday, December 16 This Week: Jicks, Jaina
Apologies for the double-Malkmus posting (bound to become triple by week's end), but the Jicks' show this Friday night has us in an excitable mood. Their Doug Fir show with openers Blitzen Trapper is the crown jewel in an otherwise relatively slow week for shows. In case you missed it (see the previous blog entry), Malkmus & his merry band of Jicksters are looking forward to Real Emotional Trash, their new album out March 4th on Matador records. The first we've heard from it, the progged-out jam "Baltimore," was made available as a free download earlier this week-- one might expect plenty more new songs on Friday night.
Also this week, Portland's own Nick Jaina plays the Doug Fir on Thursday night with The Builders & the Butchers. Singer, songwriter, producer, and all-around odd-jobber, Jaina has his hand in all kinds of pots (so to speak). That's no doubt a big reason why his 2006 release, The 7 Stations, has Portland written all over it-- "recorded in studios and kitchens and basements and community music centers all over Portland," as he puts it, with a wealth of locally based artists chipping in, members of Point Juncture WA, Horse Feathers, Heroes & Villains, and Sounds Like Fun among them. Add to this his role in producing Gill Landry's outstanding 2007 debut The Ballad of Lawless Soirez, and it's been a fruitful two years or so for Mr. Jaina.
Elsewhere, dandy warhorses The Dandy Warhols play the Roseland Theater on Wednesday night, along with The Upsidedown and The Nice Boys. That same night, Portland Cello Project instigator and cellist about town Doug Jenkins plays the Pix Patisserie on Hawthorne, and the "improv trio," RRIICCEE, featuring Vincent Gallo and Erik Erlandson, play the Mission Theater.
This thread's open all night (and then some)....

Just some general feedback: Kudos for starting the 24 hr music stream. It makes for interesting listening and it's nice to have a 24 hr source. However, let me add my voice to those who miss a broader sweep of music, ala the now defunct Eclecticity. Don't mean to criticize what you're doing now, but I'd really like to hear the breadth of styles you used to play on Eclecticity. One suggestion: maybe have a couple of different programs/styles on at different times of the day. Just my two cents worth.

Digging your mix, and like that it is getting broader and more diverse each week. I like the user ratings function, too. lots of fun! I have been spreading the word about opbmusic to all my musically-inclined pals, so prepare for a surge in usage. ;-)
also, thanks for getting the squeezebox-friendly stream going.
One suggestion: I think it would be more user-friendly to have discussions presented in some sort of standard online "forum" format, instead of as blog comments. It would help keep threads on-topic, and provide an easy way for us to access archived info.

I second Steve's comments re: eclecticity. I find I miss it muchly, and was thinking myself that some different programs or areas of focus would provide some structure for us listeners. I ain't complainin' - I've been agitating for more music on OPB for too long to say aught about it now, and the music is good. Like JAY above, I am also seeing the broadening and diversification happening. But eclecticity was a rare gem of a music show. I have a long list of cd's in my collection that I first heard on eclecticity, going back to the old days in the afternoons. -cwa

The feedback is appreciated, guys. Chauncey, you definitely win something for remembering the old afternoon timeslot -- wow, 10 years ago!
We are trying to keep things pretty eclectic, hit some interesting and varied places in the mix (Loch Lomond to Spoon to Ceu, etc) and still keep it flowing along. If you were a longtime listener, I'm guessing you would like more world music to come around?
Jeffrey: thanks for spreading the word! And have you given thought to your "best of" list for '07?

I'm in the minority. I really enjoy the spread of music here more than than that played on Eclecticity. I appreciate hearing much of my favorite music played - I've never heard some of these songs on the air. I've also been introduced to some musicians I would never have heard if not for OPB. Loch Lomond is one of those.
Which brings me to my one frustration. The "buy" button when exploring a musician's music leads to Amazon. Most of the albums I've considered buying are not available on Amazon. Any possibility of adding a link to a site where the more obscure music can actually be bought?

Last Sunday you played a singer/songwriter from Florida. What's her name?
Thanks

Hi Sue,
That was Shannon Wright, from her album Let In the Light. Oh, and apparently, she lives in Atlanta now.

OK, this is a question and a gentle 'flame', which may not belong here, but I don't see any "Contact Us" links on opbmusic.org.
How can I edit a song review?? (Especially since there's no "preview" button.)
You asked for a one-word opener (very hard). The system allowed me to put in three words, but then cut off the second two, so my one-word review is "The". And since, like many dumb systems, the longer review space cuts out all line separations, that part is hard to read and understand too.
So . . . There are some good ideas in this system, and I hope the website programmers are still on retainer to make fixes.
Great music, by the way. :)

Hey, what's that squeaking over here? Oh. Wheel.
I suppose that some simple formatting wouldn't hurt - line breaks, done. Now it's a smart system.
"One word" will continue to mean one word (though I like some of the workarounds people have been using -- camelCase -- awesome!). But, in an unprecedented release of control, reviewers now have the ability to delete their own reviews -- you know, in case they accidentally type a swear or something.

Editable reviews - good move. I sorta blew one or two myself, for the same reasons derek1g did.
David, I'm having a hard time believing it was 10 yrs ago already that you moved to evenings. Unless my mind is really going I think I'm remembering first a 2 hrs slot in the afternoon that was then shortened to 1 hr. That 2 hr show was my productive time - I think I got less done when I wasn't glued to my desk listening to good music. So yes, world music = happiness. Remember Waterlilly Accoustic's offerings (Ry Cooder or Taj with V. M Bhatt)? Toumani D'Abate? Ali Farke Toure? Got them and others from you. And lest msome gets the wrong idea, I do like what I hear. Still the best music radio in the northern Willamette Valley. Just being squeaky (eh, bak?).

Hi Elissa --
At the moment, the best way to buy music while supporting OPB is to click on the song's title wherever you may see it on the site (playlists, front page, etc.) You'll see a "Buy" button that will help you find that artist and their music on Amazon. You can buy a la carte MP3s or albums. As long as you enter Amazon through that link, OPB gets the credit.
We apologize if a particular artist isn't available through Amazon - considering the wide selection that gets played on opbmusic, they've so far been the most reliable provider, but sometimes they come up empty-handed.
