Nyles Lannon's music is one of those sonic concoctions that routinely inspires critics and fans alike to invent entirely new descriptors. "Folktronica" and "lap-top pop" are just a couple of the labels that have been offered in attempts at defining his art, which might be said to combine the hushed, autumnal tones of
Elliott Smith and
Simon & Garfunkel with the 21st century-leaning blips and beeps of
Grandaddy and
Sparklehorse. Throw in some latter-era Beatles and you might have something close to Lannon's stew, the latest manifestation of which is
Pressure, recently released by the Portland-based
Badman Recording Co. Now touring with a full band playing his one-man bedroom creations, Lannon stops by our studios tonight for a performance and interview.

Also tonight, unlikely Texans
Midlake play at the Doug Fir in Portland with opener
Maria Taylor. Their
Trials of Van Occupanther was easily one of the more interesting releases of 2006, what with its warm textures and groovy retro-tinged nods. Plus, we'll hear new, recent and upcoming releases from
Eddie Vedder,
Iron & Wine,
Toots & the Maytals,
Loch Lomond, and more.

Jeremy, even with half a voice, you're still talking circles around all the sucka MC's.
Still, hope you feel better soon.

Ha, thanks Dave-- it's a bit rough going over here. This ever happen to you? Advice?

Way to rally Jeremy...what with the sore pipes and all. Love the show, please play as much local stuff as humanly possible...old, new, whatever..a whole shows worth (there's an idea...feel free to borrow it).
Which Elliott Smith song are you playing tonight?

tonight set is absolutely stunning, I have beens sucked into staying in just to catch it.
by the by, hot water with lemon and honey does a wonder on healing up the pipes.

Hmmm, I don't know. I think I have this idea that there's some specially developed throat spray that "the pros" use and guard as a trade secret from the rest of the population. Barring getting some of that, I'd maybe recommend this:

Dave, that application is awesome! Maybe if this doesn't pass by tomorrow night....
I'm hitting green tea, lemon, honey, and lozenges...to no avail, I'm afraid. Thanks all for the get well wishes and advice.
Clay, locals coming up tonight. Did you get to hear the Ted Leo last week?
On Saturday, September 29 at 10:30pm, Clay said:
Sheeit...I missed last Sunday but thanks for the RX. Keep playing Ted and perhaps they'll play PDX more often. They're skipping us (again) but have a show in Seattle this October 23rd at Neumos...yes I've got tickets.
I refer to Ted as the "happy musical genius" in contrast to our most holy "tragic musical genius" Elliott. Long live intelligent rock and roll made with the ES-335..

I like the idea of sub-classifying musical geniuses. The possibilities are endless here, really: John Vanderslice can be the super-nice musical genius, any nominees for super-stable and pragmatic musical genius?

Hi Jeremy,
Throat coat tea, red label. Don't know if it really helps or not, but it's something to fall back on (read that in Mojo, so take it for what it's worth, which may not be much).
My vote for pragmatic genius: Joe Pernice. Word is he can make sculpture out of turkey left-overs.
Best,
L

YES! Joe Pernice is a perfect choice. I think I'll play his band while we're at it.

Again, thanks to everyone for your patience with your vocally-debilitated host. The results were less than ideal, hopefully my discordant vocal cords will have returned to something resembling normal tomorrow.
