The Facts:
Yeasayer
Odd Blood
Secretly Canadian
2/9/2010

Straight From the Horse's Mouth:
"Since the release of their critically acclaimed 2007 debut All Hour Cymbals, Yeasayer has been around the world and back again. While their first record was conceived in total artistic isolation, constant touring forced Yeasayer to finally engage with their contemporaries. Inspired by musicians hell-bent on sonic experimentation as well as those more comfortable in a pop context, Yeasayer find their domain spanning across the musical spectrum. If All Hour Cymbals was Yeasayer's attempt at global and ambient cultural mash-up then Odd Blood takes place in an off-world colony sometime after the Singularity."

The Gist Is:
Those expecting the mysticism and global-leaning sounds of the debut might be disappointed, as the core elements that made that album stand out amongst many are replaced here with sythns and songs about.....(gasp) love. Outside of the first single, "Ambling Alp," and what sounds like an electric sitar here and there, this is a complete musical about-face. For their part, the band has said that they did what they could to go against the popular grain, which is the same approach that resulted in their debut. It's a risky move, and the results can be shocking for those that never thought they'd mistake Yeasayer for Erasure's big comeback. Not that that's a bad thing. The band plays Portland's Wonder Ballroom on April 19th.

Hello, Friday. Seems like it's been ages.

Ordinarily, we'll probably use this space to send you off with a random batch of free music, just in case you haven't come across it elsewhere. This week, however, we've got all of these videos piling up around the place and thought we'd clear a few out to begin with. Still a fairly random five, in other words, just more demanding of your senses.

First up: Hot Chip. The London-based act releases their new album, One Life Stand, next Tuesday. They played the title track-- with The Roots in tow!-- on last night's Jimmy Fallon.

All over the musical blogosphere today is Spoon's new video for "Written in Reverse." Shot in a cool, crisp black-&-white that mirrors the music on the new album Transference, the piece is of the fly-on-the-wall-of-the-practice-space variety.

Finally on the V side of A/V, and not exactly random, is the new video for St. Vincent's "Laughing With a Mouth of Blood." Comedy = Laughing, see? So the video guest stars comedy duo thunderAnt (aka Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein). St. Vincent, of course, plays two shows at the Doug Fir Saturday night-- all ages at 5pm and 21+ at 9. Here's a prelude. Oh, and here's the video.

And your audio....

►The Tallest Man On Earth, from The Wild Hunt (out 4/13)- "King of Spain"

►A Weather, from Everyday Balloons (out 3/2)- "Giant Stairs"

And a bonus! Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings release I Learned the Hard Way in April and you know you better go get the title track!

To the weekend, then...

Listeners to opbmusic know we feature what's new and what's local. (Whether or not you wish to call Spoon an almost-local group because of Britt Daniel's zip code is up to you.) But regardless, the band's new record features a return to a rougher style that will likely please fans of records before Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, and it sits at the top of our most-played list this week.

Other big releases for January by the likes of Vampire Weekend and Beach House are heavy in our mix, along with Laura Veirs' very charming new record July Flame. The Gigi record is fun throwback you should hear... and fans of the first Midlake record no doubt have tomorrow circled on the calendar as the release date for their new LP, The Courage of Others.

Here's what we're currently playing:

1. Spoon - Transference

2. Beach House - Teen Dream

3. The Magnetic Fields - Realism

4. Laura Veirs - July Flame

5. Vampire Weekend - Contra

6. Gigi - Maintenant

7. Midlake - The Courage of Others

8. Surfer Blood - Astro Coast

9. Blind Pilot - iTunes Session EP

10. The Soft Pack - The Soft Pack

11. Dan Black - ((Un))

12. The Rural Alberta Advantage - Drain the Blood

13. Dirty Projectors - Ascending Melody 7"
